A forum member at the XMBC.org out of impatience has has torn down his new ATV3 exposing its internals.
The exposure confirms the use of an exclusive single-core A5 system-on-a-chip which is an upgrade from the A4 package in its predecessor but without the dual-coreprocessor in the A5 chip that was found in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. Th A5 chip revealed by the teardown has date codes on it which indicate a mid-Februarymanufacture date that is the 7th week of this year.
Besides the processor, the RAM number in the chip indicates that it is a 512 MB chip from Hynix which is again an upgraded version of the 256 MB one of the A4 packagein the predecessor. Apple TV reveals same 8 GB flash storage from Toshiba according to the format of the part number on the chip. So that means the storage capacity is same as in the previous model.
Although it had been expected that Apple could improve the on-board storage to work with larger content, yet it didn’t seem to work that way. The Cupertino maintained the 8 GB size as well as the $99 price. There is also an inclusion of a second antenna which was not there in the previous generation model.
