We’ve had this debate going on for long now. The next iPhone in the series, iPhone 5, could most probably have a larger display than the usual 3.5” which Apple has stuck to since the first iPhones of 2007.

There have been a lot of rumors flying all across, but the latest one from Reuters looks certainly over the board!

Citing South Korean media, Reuters posted a report recently saying that the iPhone 5 features will include a 4.6″ retina display. While all the iPhones presently have a 3.5″, the 4.6″ goes over an inch and puts the iPhone 5 close to the Samsung Galaxy S II (which also features the 4.6″ screen).

Previously, while it was suspected that the iPhone 5 will boast a larger screen, the dimensions that we had in mind was close to 4” only. The 4.6″ definitely seems taking the rumors too far. However, coming from Reuters, there’s enough credibility that we can’t just neglect.

Apple gets the displays made from LG or Samsung. Could it be that Apple has finally decided to take the Android route in having larger displays on its smartphone series?

A long time back, reports of how Steve Jobs actually played down the “larger display” idea because it made Apple so much Android-ish. Besides, the average user had a good time with the 3.5″ screen. But with more and more exposure to larger screen sizes, the question of whether Apple will change its stance appeared more than once.

In the recent times, in tandem with all the iPhone 5 rumors, the screen size was hotly discussed. A lot of experts opined that the 4″ screen could be a possibility on the iPhone 5 features – but the 4.6″ definitely puts things in a totally different shade.

2012 has so far been spectacular for Apple already. The new iPad sales have been excellent (according to Apple). Apple also has set to increase its cash reserves to fund more research projects and production.

The iPhone 5 release date, while still remaining largely unknown, is widely expected to fall somewhere before the end of this year – October being a popular candidate.
