If you think about how good the iPad HD / iPad 3 will look, think about how different iPhone 4 looks from iPhone 3G. Well, not exactly, but you get the idea.
The iPad 3 features a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels – which is twice the resolution found on iPad original / iPad 2. If, for the same display size (9.7″), the resolution doubles, that’s where the iPad HD scores. Of course, it took quite a lot of trial and errors for the designers to get this resolution without making the iPad HD thicker.
The iPad 2 had a 131 PPI, whereas the iPad HD will have, for the 9.7″ display, a whopping 264 PPI. It crosses not just the iPad 2, but several other resolutions also – including laptops, computers and even HDTVs. Of course, that’s why it’s said, the iPad HD will be better than a 42-inch HDTV!
The iPad 3 release date is set to be March 7, at 10.00 AM PST. Apple has been very intent on keeping things low profile till the date of launch. Several other iPad 3 features have been doing their rounds.
Besides the HD Retina display, the iPad 3 features also include a change in the processor. It should either be A6 or an upgraded A5 processor (about which we posted earlier). The iPad 3 will also, in all probability, support 4G LTE communication. With AT&T and Verizon getting their 4G networks up and ready for a full-fledged functioning, this move could be very much useful.
Well, besides all this, the iPad HD will also come with many other updates – most notably, on the OS. The iOS 5.1 has not yet seen a public release, but it is expected / anticipated that the iPad HD will come with the iOS 5.1.
For fun, here’s a visual design from BuzzFeed (by designer Amy Sly) that compares iPad 2 and other devices. The visual represents how big the iPad 2 would have to be, to get the PPI which the compared devices have. It’s interesting – especially when it gets to the 32″ CRT!!
