Muahz.Net Bridge – Millions tons of sludge every year are discharged directly to rivers, canals and unused land areas without any treatment, which has caused serious pollution to Hanoi and become a big headache of Hanoians.
According to state management agencies, the more rapid the urbanization process of Hanoi is, the more serious the environment pollution Hanoians have to suffer.
Waste thrown everywhere
State management agencies recently have continuously discovered people and businesses which illegally threw waste. In August 2011, the Hanoi Police, together with the Tu Liem transport inspectors, seized two trucks carrying tens of tons of mud and sludge from the construction site of the Keangnam project to throw at the Dai Mo field in Tu Liem district.
The area is located just behind the My Dinh National Stadium, just 200 meters from the Thang Long Boulevard. This is a thinly populated residential quarter; therefore, it has become the destination of the trucks that want to throw waste illegally.
The Khuyen Luong road in Tran Phu Ward of Hoang Mai district has also become the place for throwing waste, created from asphalt workshops. A lot of masses of sand, gravel and coal have been set up on the roadside, which have stopped all the drains. As a result, it gets dusty when the sun shines, when it gets muddy when it rains.
The asphalt workshops have been working all the time, which send dust to the residential quarters nearby. More than 50 households living on the two sides of the road are suffering from the environment.
The Tran Phu ward people’s committee has sent staff to the site, preventing people from illegally throwing sludge. However, they have given up the game, while the road has been cut into small pieces, while the environment has become seriously polluted.
Local residents complain that the water from the well in the residential quarter has become unused because of the dust and the waste. One can see a “mount of waste” just located 20-30 meter far from the residential quarter. They now have to carry water from neighboring residential quarters. Some households have made water filtration pools, but the quality of the water cannot meet the standards.
“We have to live together with dust and pollution, and we will soon suffer lung diseases one day,” said Tran Thi Vuong, a local resident, complained.
Industrial waste discharged to rivers
All the four rivers of To Lich, Kim Nguu, Lu and Set have become black with sludge. It is estimated that the mud layer at the rivers gets 10 centimeters thicker. If the dredging of the rivers cannot be done well, this would lead to the deadlock of the river flow and cause the pollution more serious.
However, the problem is that the mud from the dredging is expected to be thrown into the land areas in the suburb areas without any treatment, which would bring germs of diseases to new land areas, air and water pollution.
Meanwhile, according to Dr Nguyen Van Lam from the Mining and Geology University, after toxic substances are eliminated, sludge can be used to make construction materials (bricks, concrete). Therefore, Lam said, discharging sludge directly to the environment is a big waste.
Dr Le Huy Ba, Head of the Institute of Science, Technology and Environmental Management, said that if throwing sludge directly into the environment, people will simply bring the pollution in some areas to other areas. The pollution has turned canals and rivers in Hanoi into dead rivers, where no creature can live.
It is estimated that hundreds of tons of industrial waste every day, most come from the tanning, metal production.
