Muahz.Net Bridge – The weather in the 2011-2012 winter in the north is really anomalous if compared with the last winter, meteorological experts have said.
The flood in Lao Cai province on January 15, 2012
The anomalous cold
According to Luu Minh Hai, Deputy Director of the Lao Cai provincial Meteorology and Hydrology Department, damaging cold appeared this winter sooner than the last winters. The first spell of cold weather attacked northern provinces on December 10, 2011, and finished on December 14, 2011. As such, if comparing with the 2010-2011 winter, the first spell of damaging cold came a week earlier than usual.
Meanwhile, the first spell of damaging cold of the last winter was also reported as appearing soon. It started on December 16, 2010 and finished on December 18, 2010. The statistics showed that the latest winter, where the first spell of damaging cold came early, was 14 years ago. In 1997, damaging cold also came more early than usual. It started from December 11, 1997 to December 13, 1997.In general, the very cold weather only appears in the north and the north of the central region on the last 11 days of December, mostly on December 5 and 26. Meanwhile, in the 2011-2012 winter, northern provinces have suffered three spells of gold so far.
“This is really an abnormally high number, which shows the anomaly of the weather of the winter in the northern provinces,” Hai said.
The rain anomaly
Not only suffering the anomaly in the cold, the north has also witnessed the anomaly in the rain. Three unusual rains have been reported as the strange phenomena in the history of the meteorology – hydrology of Vietnam.
On November 30, 2011, under the influence of northeast monsoon associated with converging winds aloft, some provinces of Yen Bai, Lao Cai witnessed the record heavy rains. The rainfall level in Yen Bai City, for example, was measured at 82.2 mm, in Lao Cai city 103.4 mm, in Bao Thang district of Lao Cai 164.6 mm.
The unexpected heavy rains made many city streets of Lao Cai 30-50 cm deep under the water, while in some areas up to 50-70 cm. The rivers and streams of Lao Cai province witnessed an unexpected flood in the winter, with a margin of 20-40 cm.
Then on December 1, 2011, medium level and heavy rains occurred in all the provinces in the north, including northern mountainous and midland areas.
On January 4, 2012, medium level rains reoccurred in many localities in the half-mountain and half-plain provinces in the mountainous areas of the north. From January 14 to January 15, rains occurred in all mountainous areas of Yen Bai, Tuyen Quang, Bac Kan, Ha Giang and Lao Cai with the rainfall of between 25 and 35 mm.
In Sa Pa district of Lao Cai province, there was heavy rain with the rainfall of 82.9 mm. Another unexpected flood rushed down on the rivers and streams of the province.
“It is an abnormal thing that flood occurs in the dry season,” Hai said. Meanwhile, the northern provinces had to welcome Tet on very cold days after suffering a lot of spells of cold and unusual early rains.
Experts have attributed the climate anomaly to the La Nina which has become stronger. However, no one can give the exact answers to the question why this cold ocean current reactivates so soon.

One of the cause is flood in climate change.
