President tours Thanh Hoa Province

President Truong Tan Sang on Feb. 19 paid a visit to the Nghi Son Economic Zone in Thanh Hoa Province, where he inspected construction on Nghi Son Thermo-electric power plant No.1.

The Electricity of Vietnam project covers an area of 350ha with total investment capital of more than 22 trillion VND (1.05 million USD), 85 percent of which is funded with loans from the Japanese Government.

At the Nghi Son Oil Refinery, the President was briefed on the progress of the project. In its first phase, the refinery, with an annual capital of 10 million tonnes of crude oil, has investment capital of about 8 billion USD. The refinery will increase its capacity to up to 20 millions tonnes of crude oil per year in its second phase.

During talks with relocated households in Hai Yen Commune, one of the areas ceding land to the project, Sang expressed his pleasures at the local synergy.

On the same day, President Sang also worked with key provincial staff.

He praised the province’s efforts in recent years, especially in 2011 when it enjoyed economic growth of 12.3 percent and a revenue of nearly 5 trillion VND.

The President noted that the province should use land funds in an economical way, carefully select investment projects and create jobs for local workers.

At the meeting, the province proposed that capital be mobilised towards implementing key projects, including the construction of the Nghi Son Oil Refinery, upgrading of National Highway 1A, the north-south highway route and the development of Ngoc Lac district as a central urban area.

President Sang also paid a visit to the Lam Kinh Historical Site in central Thanh Hoa Province’s Xuan Lam Commune, where Kings of the 15th century Le dynasty are worshipped.
Boosting Vietnam-Cuba ties

Vietnam and Cuba vow to promote the ties of friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries to make their relations more substantial and effective.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong met with Co-ordinator General of the Cuban Committees for the Defence of the Revolution (CDR) Carlos Rafael Miranda Martinez in Hanoi on February 17.

Martinez thanked the Vietnamese Party, State and people for their valuable support and assistance to Cuba and congratulated Vietnam on the tremendous achievements in its renewal process for national construction and development.

He briefed the Party leader on the results of earlier talks between the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee and the CDR, as well as the recent positive changes in Cuba's socio-economic situation after nearly a year of implementing its sixth National Party Congress resolution.

Mr Martinez expressed his wish that relations between the two Parties and countries and between the VFF and CDR will be further enhanced in the future.

Vietnamese Party leader Trong highlighted the success of the Communist Party of Cuba's sixth Congress in April last year and the Party's national conference last January.

He thanked the Cuban Party and people for their support for Vietnam and also informed his guest of Vietnam’s current situation and the content of the Vietnamese Party Central Committee's fourth conference affirming Vietnam's determination to consolidate the relationship and cooperation between the two countries to improve their substance and effectiveness.

Earlier the same day, Mr Martinez also held talks with VFF President Huynh Dam.

The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation between the two Committees with a focus on stepping up public communication about the solidarity and traditional friendship between Vietnam and Cuba.
Vietnam attends executive leadership program in US

A high-level Vietnamese delegation headed by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh has taken part in the Vietnam Executive Leadership Program (VELP) at Harvard University in the US.

The event took place from February 13-17 as an annual exchange program organized by Harvard under the auspices of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

This year’s program focused on the global economy, restructuring global finance, planning macro-economic policies, and climate change – challenges and opportunities for Vietnam.

The Vietnamese officials exchanged views with leading US experts on these themes.

During the program, the Vietnamese delegation visited the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and met with overseas Vietnamese, including students in Boston.

Talking to the students, Deputy PM Ninh said that Vietnam needs high-quality human resources, especially those who have studied and worked abroad and affirmed that they will get worthy positions when they return to the country.

While in the US, the Vietnamese delegation visited Omni Parker House, where President Ho Chi Minh worked between 1911-1913.
NA Vice Chairwoman receives Thai MPs

On February 17, National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan received a delegation of the Thailand-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentary Group led by President Paijit Sree Warakan.

Mrs Ngan spoke highly of the Thai delegation’s visit and shared her sympathy over Thailand’s difficulties caused by floods.

She said she hopes that the Thai government and people will soon overcome the aftermath of the natural disaster to continue of the process of national development.

Mrs Ngan expressed her delight at the ongoing development of multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Thailand, particularly between the two parliaments, since the two countries established diplomatic ties 35 years ago.

Vietnam always attaches great importance to developing cooperation with Thailand and expressed her wish that the two sides will continue to strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation for the two countries’ prosperity and mutual benefit and for the sake of peace, cooperation and development in the region.

The two nations should further boost regional and international cooperation within the UN forums, the Non-Aligned Movement, ASEAN, ASEM and APEC, and work more closely on issues related to Mekong river water and peace and stability in the East Sea.

Paijit Sree Warakan expressed hope that friendship parliamentary groups of the two parliaments will continue their exchanges to promote mutual understanding, adding that both sides need enhance bilateral cooperation in economics, trade and tourism.
